What is Spirulina?

You may have heard about it, wondered how exactly to pronounce it or been curious about what it actually is, so here it goes - spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that is known to be incredibly nutritious for the human body. Spirulina is used in many different cuisines, but has become increasingly more popular within plant-based communities thanks to its high protein content (almost 70% protein!) and abundance of health promoting nutrients!

Spirulina is commonly found in several forms: chewable tablets, fine powder, capsules, and now - frozen cubes and raw, fresh in jars!

WHY SPIRULINA?

We’re all about the nutritional punch and long-list of health benefits that spirulina offers! This blue- green microalgae has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can improve immune system function, protect the liver, reduce allergic reactions, and increase muscle endurance - just to name a few!

With that being said, it’s also important to note the difference between dried and fresh spirulina (because trust us, there’s a BIG difference).

In order for a food to be considered living, it MUST contain complete water cells. Unfortunately, most spirulina products are spray dried at over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which reduces the water content to almost zero. If you’ve ever tried dried spirulina, you probably noticed a strong (and rather unpleasant) odour and taste - simply put, that’s dead spirulina.

Just like people, spirulina needs water to survive. This is where FRESH spirulina becomes a game-changer for your health! This superfood is a potent source of powerful antioxidants that are key in fighting free radical damage and oxidative stress!

WHAT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS?

Quite simply, antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals and work to stop the formation of new free radicals. By supplementing with antioxidant rich spirulina, we boost our bodies ability to battle environmental stresses and in some instances, we can even reverse some of the damage (yes please!).

Antioxidants are vital for everyday health and immune system support. But there’s another reason to love antioxidants – they are the ultimate defense against premature aging!

Spirulina is rich in the following antioxidants:

  • Carotenoids + beta-carotene: Beta-carotene is known for its ability to protect the body from damaging free radicals. This is important because harmful free radicals are the primary cause of chronic disease, aging, and degeneration.
  • Lutein + zeaxanthin: Known as the antioxidants that protects your eyes and skin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are considered natural treatment modalities for eye disorders, like macular degeneration.
  • Cryptoxanthin: This antioxidant recognized as a precursor of Vitamin A, which is essential for eyesight, growth, development and immune support.
  • Superoxide Dismutase: This powerful antioxidant is known to repair cells and reduce cellular damage in the body - making every cell in the body more resilient to outside pollutants and toxins.

In addition to fighting free radicals and oxidative stress, the antioxidants found in fresh spirulina help with detox, wrinkles, tissue regeneration, longevity, inflammation and disease!
